Got a hot date on the horizon? Wondering where to go? I gotcha covered.
I caught the soul train down to Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret last night. It’s definitely worth the round trip; every Wednesday night, Lannie’s hosts some of Denver’s most talented soul and R&B musicians. Last night, Ron Ivory and his Miles Apart Band rhythm section took the stage for a night of Motown hits, classic soul tunes, and doo-wop standards. Ivory and three other singers, dressed in sharp suits and ties, took turns on the lead and backup vocals and added the occasional sax to the rhythm section (drums, bass, guitar, keys). Lannie has often noted her love for soul and R&B music, and it seems that Denver has plenty of other admirers of the genre. The club wasn’t sold out last night, but a sizeable crowd — ranging from well-dressed, middle aged black couples out for a classy date night to clusters of finger-snapping white chicks like my group — gathered ’round to sway to the beat and watch Mr. Ivory work the room. (And work it he did; Ivory’s silky voice is as smooth as his flirty style with the ladies.)
I’ve become quite taken with Lannie’s nightclub lately. Every time I go, it seems like a breath of fresh air, and the sort of place Denver has been lacking until now. Tonight the cabaret hosts a weekly “naughty burlesque” performance, and soon she’ll start her next big stage show, “Under Paris Skies,” featuring the Gypsy Swing Revue. So grab a date, break out a sassy cocktail dress, and prepare to hit the best little underground cabaret in town.
