The pink candy hearts have arrived in every grocery store and the florists are greedily anticipating the rush. Valentine’s Day is on its way, ready to confound well-meaning men and frustrate singles across the nation in (gasp!) only a few short weeks. Ugh. But look on the bright side. There’s a cool project going on, sponsored by the Orphan’s Foundation of America and Einstein Bros. Bagels. The Red Scarf Project will send Valentine’s care packages to foster children who have beat the odds and made their way to college — usually on their own without any traditional family support — including cozy handknit or crocheted red scarves. (Time to put that Stitch & Bitch club to work, right ladies?) It’s a national program, but locally all 28 Denver area Einstein Bros. Bagels will offer a free bagel between January 22 and 28 to knitting groups (or singles) who either bring a scarf to work on or a finished one to donate into one of their stores. You can get a coupon for the offer online or at yarn shops in the metro area (Jo Ann, La Ti Da, etc.), and drop the finished scarves off at any location until January 31. Need help getting started?
