What’s the big event this weekend? Hands down, the Denver Polo Classic. Everyone is buzzing about the event, whether they are hitting Friday’s sexy Latin-themed black tie gala, the casual family day during the semifinals on Saturday, or Sunday’s final polo match, where some of the best players in the world will face off. All the events will benefit the Denver Nuggets Community Fund via the Denver Active 20-30 Children’s Foundation, so it’s for a great community cause as well. I’ll be hitting the Sunday event myself. Friday’s gala will be the talk of the society pages, but Sunday’s event is the one I love. Of course, as an equestrian since childhood I’m actually interested in the polo match, unlike many of the spectators who tend to somewhat ignore the game. (I once spent a great summer warming up polo ponies for a friend’s dad down at the Columbine field.) But Sunday is also about the attire. Denver doesn’t offer many opportunities for women to wear summer garden dresses and huge hats (think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman) and so it’s a unique shopping opportunity. I’ve found that the main department stores tend to have a small selection of semi-dressy straw hats, but for the best garden hats, you have to turn to the bridal boutiques. Not for the brides, but the mother of the bride. See? Now you’re with me. It’s a highly unusual fundraiser, so it’s well worth it to try to hit one of the three events this weekend. They offer the whole spectrum of styles, from formal to picnic-casual to garden party, and the tickets range from $150 for Friday or Sunday to only $30 for Saturday (kids under 10 are free). All you have to do is decide which hat you want to wear.
