The fuel light just came on in your car, and your grumbling belly is telling you that you need a top-off, too. But the thought of microwave burritos, shriveled hot dogs slowly spinning under a heat lamp, or questionable jerky doesn’t exactly get your mouth watering. Fortunately, metro Denver has a few options for a pit stop and a great meal.

While Denver can’t beat Mississippi, Louisiana, and other Southern locales for great gas station grub, these three restaurants under the awnings of Sinclair, Conoco, and Stop 4 Gas stations offer menus full of delicious global bites.

1. Shahristan Kabob and Gyro

Shahristan Kabob and Gyro serves some of Denver’s best halal meats out of a North Broadway Conoco station. The plates and sandwiches may take a minute, but that’s because the beefy gyros and chicken shawarma are shaved fresh off the vertical spit for every order. To-go orders are piled into aluminum trays and topped off with a secret-recipe white sauce, rivaling New York City’s famous halal carts. Get the combo meal with fries, great for swiping through Shahristan’s super-creamy hummus. Falafel are a good choice, too—if you don’t mind a few crumbs on your car seats. 7310 Broadway, Denver

2. Garibaldi Mexican Bistro

Hiding inside an Englewood Sinclair, Garibaldi Mexican Bistro turns out unique Mexican street food from owner Jesus Cruz. Far beyond even typical taqueria fare you’d expect in similar settings, Garibaldi’s menu covers seldom-seen dishes like papazules (potato tacos), huaraches (sandal-shaped fried masa), and, when the season’s right, huitlacoche (a corn fungus delicacy that funkifies quesadillas). Oaxacan tlayudas—giant corn tortillas crisped and layered with frijoles, cheese, and your choice of meat—are worth a stop even if you recently filled up your tank. Don’t skip the pre-Colombian Azteca section of the menu, featuring nopales, blue corn tortillas, potatoes, and lots of fresh chiles. 3298 S. Broadway, Englewood

3. Mexico Lindo Family Mexican Restaurant

For solid tacos, burritos, and margaritas on your way in or out of town, pull into the Morrison Stop 4 Gas on U.S. 285. A pit stop at Mexico Lindo Family Mexican Restaurant could easily turn into the best part of your trip. We recommend enjoying this meal at one of their tables, since Mexico Lindo’s best dishes aren’t easy to eat behind the wheel. Start with the Idaho nachos, in which tortilla chips are swapped out for fried potato skins and topped with guacamole, sour cream, shredded cheese, and diced veggies. The kitchen turns out a great range of enchiladas, too; ask for yours sunrise-style for two fried eggs perched atop your green chile-smothered platter. 9064 U.S. 285, Morrison
