Richard Wayde Hamar, a 12-year-old from Yuma, was riding a bull during the Longmont Elks Little Britches Rodeo, when he flew from it and was stomped on his chest and stomach.

“It was just a fluke accident,” police Sergeant Mike Dimond tells Boulder’s Daily Camera.

Hamar died when he arrived at Longmont United Hospital, according to Longmont’s Daily Times-Call, despite the fact that he was wearing a helmet and vest, and was conscious after the incident, which his parents witnessed.

Lynn Dunn, who heads the Longmont Elks, says the club will consult with Little Britches, but nobody has suggested canceling any events. Since 2001, The Denver Post counts five deaths involving children at various rodeos. The National Little Britches Rodeo Association, headquartered in Colorado Springs, holds more than 275 rodeos for those aged 8 to 18 across the United States, including a national championship in Pueblo.
