The first boutique hotel to open in Aspen in over 25 years is a luxurious outpost for both work or play. The new Aspen Street Lodge is designed in a modified residential style, with nine lodge rooms and a lavish penthouse apartment, plus a swanky game room and bar, yoga room, theater room, and a rooftop entertainment deck with knock-out mountain views.

Located across from Paepcke Park and alongside Frances Whitaker Park, the hotel is a short meander away from Aspen’s many shops and restaurants. But staying home is a good option too, since guests can enjoy meals produced by Aspen Street Lodge’s resident chef. The lodge also offers an onsite mountain guide for ski lessons or cycling adventures. In fact, local experts are on hand to help with most any guest request, from party and wedding planning to private painting lessons, whitewater rafting, and summiting a fourteener.

“Our superb location and intimate setting provide the best of a luxury hotel combined with the comfort and amenities of a residence,” says general manager Brittany Shami. “A team of experienced and local staff provide high-touch and tailored service that is customized to each group, whether they are here for custom experiences, a celebration, a family reunion, or a board retreat or business gathering.”

The lodge was designed by Aspen-based architecture firm Forum Phi and built by Aspen’s Madigan + Company. “The structural scale embraces brick to complement the historical character of Aspen, while also using gable roofs to honor residential properties,” says project architect Lori Gerety, who collaborated with principal-in-charge Ryan Walterscheid. “The mix of the lighter stone and darker siding mimics the rugged textures of the wilderness, and the bark of aspen trees.”

The structure is more than just a pretty building—it’s also smart and sustainable. “Through careful construction sequencing, geothermal loops utilize the entire building’s footprint to generate a 360,000-BTU-per-hour, ground-source heat pump system,” Gerety explains. “Every roof surface available to sun exposure is clad in a photovoltaic panel, resulting in a 20-kW photovoltaic system.” Indoors, the lodge’s smart-home features include remote systems for temperature, shades, lighting, and TV.

The lodge’s flexible layout allows spaces to be opened up or locked off according to the needs of each group of guests. Four lodge rooms, three premium lodge rooms (with fireplace and soaking tub), and two bunk rooms range in size from 309 to 640 square feet. The 3,254-square-foot penthouse apartment has two bedrooms, an office, kitchen, bar, living room, dining room, and two terraces.

Dallas-based interior designer Debra Owens furnished the spaces in a style she describes as “sophisticated, fun, intimate, and enjoyable, with beautiful backgrounds to complement the stunning views.” Owens gave each room its own personality, juxtaposing bold, hand-painted wallcoverings from Porter Teleo with Venetian plaster walls; charred Western red cedar with Douglas fir; and stone, blackened steel, shearling, and leather. Sculptural lighting pieces from Apparatus, Roll & Hill, and Rich Brilliant Willing add drama, while shades of blue, green, rust, and yellow nod to the mountain setting.

“With the walls of large glass windows and doors leading to wraparound balconies, Aspen vistas take center stage,” Owens says. “The shearling rugs, nubby fabrics, marbles, wood, steel, and modern, sophisticated palette are supporting characters.”

Offering sweeping views of Aspen Mountain and Shadow Mountain, the lodge’s 1,386-square-foot rooftop deck can accommodate up to 49 guests—and keep them entertained with a heated pool, hot tub, and complete outdoor kitchen equipped with high-end Kalamazoo appliances including a grill, smoker, and pizza oven.

Because of the pandemic, Aspen Street Lodge is only being offered on a complete buy-out basis for 2021, with a maximum capacity of 32 guests.
