Nearly one in 10 Coloradans struggles with hunger. But Re:Vision, a non-profit based in southwest Denver’s Westwood neighborhood, is doing something about that. By helping nearly 2,000 low-income families in the area establish thriving vegetable gardens—and founding the Westwood Food Cooperative, where residents can purchase fresh foods at a fair price—Re:Vision has built what is now heralded as one of the largest resident-led food systems in the country.
Pretty amazing, right? You can help, too—and enjoy a killer party—at Re:Vision’s first-annual benefit dinner, Buen Provecho, on Saturday, October 13. The event will feature dishes from seven local chefs representing four Latin American countries, as well as highlight the inspiring—and often uncelebrated—stories of hardworking immigrants in this country.
“By shining a spotlight on the stories of these successful chefs and immigrants, we are also bringing the focus back to our community in Westwood,” says Joseph Teipel, Re:Vision’s executive director. “Buen Provecho will be a night to tell the stories of our community and how we are solving issues of food access and community development, while keeping our vibrant Latino roots and culture at the forefront.”
The farm-to-table, family-style feast (served al fresco, rain or shine) will begin with a cocktail hour; expect signature drinks created especially for the event by Bear Creek Distillery. For dinner, the chefs—including Dana Rodriguez of Work & Class and Super Mega Bien; Jose Avila of Machete restaurants; Adriana Rondón from El Camino de la Arepa; Keigh Crespo of Dos Abuelas; Edwin Sandoval of Xatrucho; and Matayas Urban of Leña—will use fresh ingredients from area farms to present dishes that represent their cultures. Tacos al pastor, rajas con crema, traditional Venezuelan arepas, and churros with chocolate are just a few menu highlights. To finish, attendees can expect decadent treats from Damaris Ronkanen, owner of Cultura Craft Chocolate. Sounds pretty sweet, in more ways than one.
If you go: Event tickets are selling out fast, so don’t wait to buy yours. Tickets are $100 per person and $175 couple. October 13, 6-10 p.m. at Rise Westwood, 3738 Morrison Road
