Surely Denver Broncos head coach John Fox, general manager Brian Xanders, and team vice president John Elway wouldn’t use their second pick in April’s NFL draft to select a quarterback—would they? Apparently, Elway and the rest of the Broncos’ brain trust are taking a serious look at the draft’s group of quarterbacks, including Auburn’s Cam Newton, Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert, and Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick (Denver Post). Elway says the team is simply doing proper due diligence. “We’re always looking for that guy,” he says. “We may already have the guy who can pull the trigger and win us a championship someday. We may have him. We don’t know. We believe in Tim [Tebow], but he’s not there yet.”
Tebow’s deficiencies aside, that the Broncos are even talking about taking a quarterback with their top draft pick roils fans. Xtra Point Football thinks Elway risks failing like Michael Jordan—a great player who couldn’t succeed as an executive—if he takes a quarterback. But ESPN says it’s all for show, and the team is still focused on defense.
