Sometimes things are just inevitable, and the Colorado Avalanche firing coach Tony Granato is one of them. The team has let go of Granato, the rest of the coaching staff, and a front-office executive, and promoted assistant general manager Greg Sherman to be the team’s new general manager, reports The Denver Post. There’s no word on who the next coach will be, but the teams’ first choice, former Avs goalie Patrick Roy, turned down an offer to coach the team in May (read 5280’s recap here).

Whatever lucky soul ends up coaching the beleaguered Avs next season, they’ve got a lot of hard work ahead. The team ended up dead last in the National Hockey League Western Conference last season, scoring a league-low 190 goals (via The Associated Press).

Sherman’s also got his work cut out for him, with only $10 million or so to spend on buying at least one new goalie (maybe two) and luring some quality free agents to Denver. He’ll also have to figure out what’s going to happen with team captain Joe Sakic, who spent the majority of last year injured.
