The Colorado Rockies took three of four games from the San Diego Padres over the weekend, including yesterday’s 6-1 cruise. The Associated Press notes (via ESPN) that Rockies pitcher Jason Marquis threw eight solid innings, drove in two runs, and became baseball’s first 12-game winner in 2009.
The Rockies are now 50-42, eight games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers and just a half game behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League wild-card chase.
Purple Row points out that the National League West has three 50-game-winning teams after Colorado won yesterday, something matched only in the monster American League East. Problem is that we’re neck-and-neck with the Giants and may not be able to chase down the Dodgers, who won again yesterday (via the Los Angeles Times).
The Rockies have a definite shot at the wild card; they could conceivably make a run at the division if they continue winning games and the Dodgers slide just a bit. All will be lost, though, if a Sunday report in The Boston Globe is accurate: The Dodgers are allegedly in the market for former Arvada star Roy Halladay (pictured), one of the best pitchers in baseball, whose name has been lighting up the trade rumors for weeks.
