Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made her first visit to NORAD on Thursday, checking out Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base. Napolitano, who The Associated Press reports is on a short list to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter, followed up her tour with a news conference, along with NORAD/NorthCom commander General Victor Renuart. Napolitano and Renuart fielded questions on swine flu and Peterson security (via the Colorado Springs Gazette), and Napolitano also responded to inquiries regarding the Supreme Court appointment, saying she hadn’t spoken with President Obama about it. The Associated Press reports that Renuart says he approved “prudent” changes to NORAD’s headquarters following a security review that raised questions over plans to move some operations from Cheyenne Mountain to Peterson Air Force Base. Congress will get to check out the recommendations before they become public.
