Lamar City Councilman Kirk Crespin doesn’t like a bill circulating in the state Legislature that would ban high schools from having American Indian mascots unless the schools get approval to continue using them from a state board. “There’s a lot of pride for being a Lamar Savage,” Crespin tells The Denver Post of Lamar High School’s team mascot. “Why should we have to go through the state to get a mascot approved that’s been around for decades?” But the sponsor of Senate Bill 107, state Senator Suzanne Williams, an Aurora Democrat who is one-quarter Comanche, says she’s concerned with how American Indian mascots represent the culture. Many are cartoons “with a funny nose or something.” Her bill would create a fine for schools that don’t comply. State Bill Colorado reports that no count is immediately available on how many schools have suspect mascots, but the publication identifies a couple, including La Veta High School’s Redskins. Wisconsin lawmakers are also considering a bill similar to Williams’, notes Fox 21 News.
