Considering all he’s been through, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Denver Nuggets coach George Karl hang it up and call it a career. The 59-year-old is already among the winningest coaches in NBA history, with a record of 1,023-698 over 23 years. Throw in a couple very public battles with cancer and the Carmelo Anthony drama, and his withdrawal from the game, or a fresh start with another team, would be understandable. But rather than walk away, Karl will stick it out to finish his career in Denver, agreeing to a three-year contract extension, with team options for one-year deals after that (Denver Post).
Karl, an old-school coach profiled in April 2009 by 5280’s Robert Sanchez, says his new team has re-energized him, and publicly thanks team owners Stan and Josh Kroenke for sticking with him through the years (Reuters).
