U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck thinks so-called “birthers,” people who question the authenticity of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate, are “dumbasses.” And although officials in Hawaii have verified that Obama was, indeed, born there, some birthers are going to extraordinary lengths to stand up for their views, including U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Terrence Lakin, who will be arraigned today at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. Lakin, a doctor from Greeley, failed to report to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, for deployment to Afghanistan because he questions whether Obama, the nation’s commander in chief, has the right to order him there, according to The Associated Press. Lakin is charged with disobeying a lawful order and dereliction of duty, reports CNN. “I am not guilty of these charges and will plead ‘not guilty’ to them because of my conviction that our commander-in-chief may be ineligible under the United States Constitution to serve in that highest of all offices,” Lakin says in a press release issued this week by the American Patriot Foundation, which created a legal defense fund for him. As President Obama celebrated his 49th birthday earlier this week, a CNN/Opinion Research poll found that 41 percent of Republicans, and 27 percent of all Americans, believe Obama was “probably” or “definitely” born in another country (via The Washington Post).
