Much like Ireland, Colorado has a rich beer history. In fact, Colorado’s silver rush in the 1870s and 1880s brought in a significant Irish population, and the impact on our state’s thriving beer culture endures today. Now, with Saint Patrick’s Day almost upon us, let us fill our mugs with local, high-quality craft versions of classic Irish beers. Trust us—these four standouts are a whole lot more festive (and delicious) than green beer.
Call to Arms Brewing Company’s Dust in the Wind Dry Irish Stout
This dark elixir was originally brewed for Stout Month in February. Lucky for us, Berkeley’s Call to Arms made enough to last through St. Patrick’s Day. Brewed with Hallertau Mittlefruh hops and four kinds of malt, this beer offers roasty notes on the nose and a dry, slightly smoky, chocolatey finish. Cozy up to the counter at Call to Arms’ old-timey bar to sip your pint and you might even convince yourself that you’re at a side-street pub somewhere in Dublin.
Where to get it: On draft at Call to Arms Brewing, 4526 Tennyson St.
Platt Park Brewing Company’s Mick Lovin’ Irish Red Ale
With its seductive reddish-copper hue, this seasonal draft from PPBC is a stunner. The Mick Lovin’ is fermented for about two weeks before the addition of Nugget and Mt. Hood hops. Despite its sweet, malty aroma, this full-bodied brew is well balanced and effortlessly smooth. And at 6.1-percent ABV, it packs a little more wallop than other brews of this variety. We imagine it would pair beautifully with some fish n’ chips.
Where to get it: On draft at Platt Park Brewing Company, 1875 S Pearl St. Also at Park Center Lounge, Historians Ale House, and Esters Neighborhood Pub
Renegade Brewing Company’s O’Connell Lead Stout
As the second brew in Renegade’s historical beer series, this stout’s name is a nod to Leadville’s Irish roots. Perhaps as a fitting tribute to those hard-working immigrants, this seasonal special is served in a larger-than-usual 20-ounce mug. The easy-drinking, 5.5-percent ABV stout boasts aromas of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Best of all: On St. Patty’s Day, it’s only going to cost you $4 per pour.
Where to get it: On draft at Renegade Brewing Company, 925 W. Ninth Ave.
Comrade Brewing Company’s RedCon Irish Red Ale
RedCon has been a constant presence on the tap list since Comrade opened in the Indian Hills neighborhood four years ago. Crafted with Chinook, Golding, and Cascade hops and American yeast, it sports a citrusy aroma and pleasantly dry finish. After tossing a few back of these decidedly drinkable ales, you may just find yourself humming the Dropkick Murphys.
Where to get it: On draft at Comrade Brewing Company, 7667 E Iliff Ave. Also at Blue Pan Pizza, Hops & Pie, and the Crafty Fox Taphouse & Pizzeria
