Pam Tebow, whose son scored his first touchdown with the Denver Broncos on Sunday, is dipping her toe into the rough and icy waters of Colorado politics to endorse Amendment 62, the so-called “personhood” measure, which would essentially equate abortion to murder and could ban some forms of birth control and infertility treatments. “A child’s right to life begins at conception, not at birth,” Tebow says (via Personhood USA). “From conception, all children are people, made in the image and likeness of God.” Tebow’s endorsement of Amendment 62 comes as little surprise, after an appearance alongside her two-time-Heisman-trophy-winning son in a pro-life television ad by Focus on the Family during the Super Bowl earlier this year.
On the other side of the measure, the Denver City Council, led by Councilwoman Carol Boigon, has passed a proclamation with the support of 11 members against Amendment 62, which is the only anti-abortion issue on the ballot anywhere in the country, points out The Denver Post. The council’s proclamation states: “Amendment 62 would codify the beliefs of one religious tradition in the Colorado State Constitution and thereby end or severely limit many standard medical practices in women’s health care, including family planning, infertility treatment, safe management of miscarriages and abortions after rape or incest, or to protect the life of the mother.”
The Colorado State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is also formally opposed to the amendment, and “No on 62” spokeswoman Cara DeGette tells the Post (in a separate article) that it represents the first time the NAACP has taken a public position on a reproductive-health initiative.
Meanwhile, Choice USA takes a look at the absurdity that could arise from a literal interpretation of a personhood measure (via Salon).
