Colorado sports fans have always shown the ability to get behind one of their own, and it’s time to do it again. Vail’s Lindsey Vonn is up for the 2009 Women’s Sports Foundation’s Sportswoman of the Year award, writes the Vail Daily.
And her competition is steep. Among the nine others she faces is snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis of Vermont, the snowboardcross world’s most dominating athlete.
But Vonn has her own pile of awards. She’s coming off a record-breaking season, in which she won both the World Cup overall and downhill titles for the second year in a row, along with the World Cup super-G title. The Daily notes that Vonn also swept gold in downhill and super-G at the February World Alpine Ski Championships, then won her 19th World Cup win just two weeks after having a tendon in her right thumb surgically repaired.
With a splint on her hand, Vonn won five more World Cup races after the World Championships, ending the season with a U.S.-record nine wins in a single season. The only World Cup races she hasn’t won are in giant slalom.
So, what’s it going to be, Colorado? Are we going to let some snowboarder from Vermont beat our girl? I didn’t think so. Voting ends Sunday, so hit up the Women’s Sports Foundation, and let’s get this thing done.
