Ghost Pepper Wing-Eating Contest, June 30
The competition will really heat up during this food-focused battle of endurance. Look on as contestants devour wings covered in spicy ghost pepper sauces—the eater who makes it through every plate will take home $50 and dinner for two. While you watch these hungry candidates battle it out, enjoy live music by bluesy group Lady and the Gentlemen and folk band the Heartstring Hunters as well as your own platter of 50-cent wings. They Still Live, June 30 to July 18
Explore the intricacies of lineage and identity at this meditative exhibit, which features portraits by Denver-based photographer Thomas “Detour” Evans. By juxtaposing scenes of modern American life with traditional African masks and art, Evans brings viewers to the crossroads of family histories. The project, which is both a statement of pride and a lament for lost ancestry, demands viewers to ask themselves what it means to be African-American. Film On The Fly: Top Gun, June 30
At this free screening in Denver International Airport’s new open-air plaza, the only checks you’ll be writing are the ones your body can’t cash. The night kicks off with a live rock show by ’80s tribute band New Sensation and a barbecue meal prepared by chefs from Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. After dinner, watch Maverick (Tom Cruise) complete aerial stunts, lose his partner, and shine in combat in this classic action flick. Digital playtime goes three-dimensional at this Nintendo-themed party. All weekend, kids can get their hands on the new Nintendo 3DS XL—which includes a touch screen as well as 3D video and photo capability—plus a variety of games, including Yoshi’s New Island, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. GALA Festival, July 2 to July 6
Celebrate the end of Pride Month by checking out the world’s largest LGBTQ performance. Musical groups from around the world, including the Beijing Queer Chorus, New York–based string quartet Well Strung, and Cuba’s only gay choir, Mano a Mano, will take the stage. You can also enjoy a flash mob rendition of “If You Were Gay” from the musical Avenue Q and catch a thought-provoking screening of the new documentary Call Me Kuchu, which explores gay rights in Uganda.
