Thinx hasn’t been shy about addressing the elephant in the room—or rather, the red dot in the panties. A few years ago, the New York–based start-up launched its now-legendary absorbent underwear, which you’re supposed to be able to wear sans tampon or pad during your monthly flow. Yes, the company’s been plagued by controversy since (think: suggestive ads, a sexual harassment settlement). But here’s the bottom line: Most women have to deal with a monthly period and all the side effects that come with it. They deserve some support and guidance.
That’s exactly what Thinx is trying to give when it brings its Period Management Service (PMS) truck to Denver today through Saturday as part of a three-city tour. Staffers will of course be showing off the innovative undergarments (you’ll be able to try them on, though I doubt Thinx will be thrilled if you actually test them), and resident period specialist Dani Berkowitz will also be on site to offers tips and tricks for making your menstrual experience a bit more pleasurable. For instance: “Your period isn’t so scary once you learn to embrace it,” Berkowitz says. “Start by adopting a routine around your cycle: Mark its time of arrival on your calendar; be prepared (with Thinx, a menstrual cup, tampon, etc.), and prioritize self-care.” The truck will also boast a donation box for unused female sanitary products, which will go to I Support The Girls, a nonprofit that distributes tampons and maxi pads to homeless women and girls.
Thinx is also partnering with local establishments to host supplemental events, including
• A community night at Bar Fausto, featuring red-colored cocktails, PMS-friendly foods (yes, that’s a thing), and plenty of period-themed stories; Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
• A guided yoni meditation (described as “breath work for your vagina”), led by Berkowitz; Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (also at Bar Fausto)
• A panel discussion on women’s health featuring local female changemakers, such as Fierce45 fitness studio founder Torrey Newman and Virginia Santy, co-founder of female-oriented coworking space Women in Kind; Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at ATC DEN gallery
• A $30 Pilates-inspired workout at Fierce45’s LoHi location; Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon
Denver is one of just three cities the Thinx PMS truck is visiting, in addition to Chicago and Dallas. “We’re based in NYC and spend a lot of time in LA, but we wanted to create an experience that was designed for everyone in between, in cities that deserve the same attention and excitement as the East and West coasts,” says Emma Wolfe, an account manager for Astrsk PR, which does marketing for Thinx. “That’s why we settled on Denver—it’s an active, engaged city that values innovation and deserves to be recognized.” We couldn’t agree more.
The Thinx PMS truck will be open to the public on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Port Side; on Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fierce45 and from 4 to 8 p.m. at ATC DEN; and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Fierce45.
