Nine-year-old Genesis Sims was beaten harshly with a belt by her father’s girlfriend, Monique Lynch, for soiling herself. Then, as she struggled to recover without medical care for two days, the girl was placed in a plastic bag and buried in the basement of a home in Monument, north of Colorado Springs, according to an arrest affidavit released to news organizations the day Lynch was charged with first-degree murder in Sims’ death. Lynch faces a possible life sentence, and the father, Hanif Sims, who was arrested with Lynch in July after spending several months on the run, was charged with concealing a body, child abuse resulting in death, and tampering with evidence, writes the Colorado Springs Gazette. After the beating, Hanif Sims told authorities he left the house while Lynch gave his daughter a bath. When he returned, Genesis was not breathing, so he took her to bed and gave her mouth-to-mouth (via Fox 21). He buried his daughter two days later. When detectives asked Sims why he and Lynch failed to call authorities for help, he said Lynch, who is currently pregnant, was opposed because she had a warrant out for her arrest and did not want to go to jail.
