Skiers have been heading into the backcountry for generations, beckoned by pristine powder and a closer connection to nature than any resort could ever provide. More and more snowboarders are getting in on the action, as the Colorado Springs Gazette notes better equipment—specifically, the splitboard—is making it easier for them. The splitboard might initially look like a conventional snowboard, but it splits in half to create skis so riders can move uphill cross-country style (rather than by exhausting hiking ascents). One splitboard manufacturer in Utah says all its products are on back order as the idea takes hold.

Still, the more riders go out of bounds, the more fatal accidents are likely to occur, often followed by legal action. One attorney in Summit County warns ski resorts, pointing to a recent state Court of Appeals ruling that found they could be held liable even if riders are hurt out of bounds (via the Summit Daily News).
