You want the best for your little learner, but a parent can only take so many repetitive, nursery rhyme-riddled tyke music classes. That’s not what you’ll find at Songs for Seeds. The New York City-based program is expanding in Colorado to bring the live music experience to the youngest rock stars—from infants up to six-year-olds. Songs for Seeds planted its first pop-up class in Denver last year and is set to open its second location in Highlands Ranch the week of Labor Day.
Each 45-minute Songs for Seeds class is hosted by a full three-piece band, which includes professional musicians performing on guitar, keyboards, and drums. And even though adults lead the show, kids are fully expected to jam out on the full-sized instruments in the final minutes of each program. Woven throughout the tunes are tidbits on culture, numbers, and geography, along with top 40 songs that everyone in the room will enjoy.
Duane Amado, who is opening the south metro area location with his wife, Brooke, says if a program like Songs for Seeds would have come along during his childhood, he might have taken a different path. “If I would have come to Songs for Seeds as a kid, I would be a musician right now,” Amado says. “We bring the live experience to kids. It’s a true, plugged-in music class. They get to hear an instrument and actually see where the sounds are coming from.”
The Highlands Ranch location, which offers classes at the Avanti Music Academy, opens on September 5 with a smattering of freebie classes to give interested families a peek at its offerings. And if you’re closer to the Denver crew, which holds classes at the Timbuk Toys in University Hills Plaza, every kid’s first jam session is free. After that, you can sign-up for a monthly membership that includes one class per week. And you don’t have to split up siblings (bonus: sibling and twin discounts!) who are different ages. Each child, regardless of age, gets something different out of Songs for Seeds—whether that’s just being in a room filled with activity and sounds or testing a six-string for the first time.
“It’s going to be the best 45 minutes you spend with your kids each week,” Amado says. Just a fair warning: You might have to add a new instrument lesson to the schedule once Junior gets his hands on the drum sticks.
