Colorado has plenty of luxury lodging, but we’ve also got some outside-the-box accommodations. Next time you’re up for an adventure, try staying in one of these unusual properties.
Sleep in an old caboose or covered wagon: A bright red train caboose (pictured) is the most popular lodging option at Strawberry Park Hot Springs (near Steamboat Springs), so you’ll need to reserve this one early. While you’re there, soak in the 106 degree springs (you can still get that massage). $60—$115 per night for two people.
Travel Native-American style: At Jellystone Park-Resort in Larkspur, you can sleep under the stars in a tipi. These accommodations are for the truly enterprising—in other words, there’s no heat, plumbing, or running water. Bonus: The park offers plenty of activites to keep the kiddos busy. $49—$71 per night.
Camp out at Cresto Ranch: Just down the road from Dunton Hot Springs is the restored ghost town’s newest masterpiece: eight safari-style tents situated at a pristine alpine clearing in the San Juan mountains. Each luxurious abode comes with a king bed, private lounging porch, gas stove, and a six-foot soaking tub. This is glamping at its finest. $1,400 per night for two people.
