If you work with any Colorado Avalanche fans, you may notice they don’t have any fingernails left when you see them in the office today. That’s because the Avs scored three goals in the final two minutes of last night’s game, stunning the defending-champion Chicago Blackhawks 7-5 at the Pepsi Center. Mile High Hockey wonders if both teams were offensively potent or just defensively challenged, noting that whatever your perspective on the Avs, you can’t deny they’re tenacious.
The Denver Post shines the spotlight on Tomas Fleischmann, one of the Avs’ unsung left wingers. The Czechoslovakian scored one goal and assisted on two others, playing a key role in the comeback win. He tied the game 5-5 with less than three minutes to go, before feeding Matt Duchene for the game winner and then Ryan O’Reilly for an empty-net goal to put the game away.
The win puts the Avs at 36 points on the year, tied with the Vancouver Canucks for the lead in the Northwest Division. The Canucks have two fewer losses than the Avs, who are technically in second place, although they’re still in a great position with more than a third of the season behind them. NHL.com points out that the Avs could build on that success, as they’ll play the next 15 of 20 games at the Pepsi Center, a stretch that will take them through January.
