With just $24,000 left in his coffers, and without the support of the Republican Party or tea party faithful, Dan Maes’ campaign seems to have tanked.
“He can’t run a campaign on that,” pollster Floyd Ciruli tells The Associated Press. “All he can do is go through the motions and attend debates.”
Maes has raised just $14,000 in the past two weeks, a pittance compared to what his competitors, American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo and Democrat John Hickenlooper, have raked in. Tancredo reported raising $120,000 and Hickenlooper $218,000 in the same period in filings with the Colorado Secretary of State. The news is doubly bad for Maes, after boasting that he could raise half a million dollars in a single day on September 17, according to a release his campaign issued last week. Maes spokesman Nate Strauch admits to Westword that the actual amount falls far short of the target—less than six figures.
Meanwhile, a group of 12 “concerned citizens” from northeast Colorado has sent an “open letter” to Tancredo, chiding him for his record, including his votes for the Troubled Assets Relief Program, reports The Colorado Independent.
