Colorado’s professional sports teams were nearly as schizophrenic as the weather over the weekend. LoDo turned purple Friday with the Rockies’ season opener (5280 photo gallery), while on the diamond, the Rox earned a split against the Arizona Diamondbacks, dropping the first game 7-6 and winning the second 3-1. With the third game snowed out Sunday, the team begins the season decently, despite hand injuries to starting pitchers Ubaldo Jimenez and Jorge De La Rosa. Both are expected to recover (Denver Post).

Across LoDo, the Avalanche continued its worst season ever, losing Paul Stastny for the rest of the year to an injury (Fox News), as well as a game to the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Sunday at the Pepsi Center (Mile High Hockey).

Out in Commerce City, the Rapids crushed D.C. United 4-1 on Sunday and are now 3-0 for the first time in franchise history (ColoradoRapids.com). The game of the weekend, however, was easily the Denver Nuggets’ 95-90 win over the Lakers in Los Angeles. With it, the Nuggets have officially qualified for the playoffs and improved to 15-4 since you-know-who whined his way out of town (Denver Post).
