The Monitor in Texas reports that Mexican investigators are unsure whether Colorado native David Michael Hartley was actually shot in the head and left for dead after an alleged pirate attack last week on Falcon Reservoir, where waters straddle the U.S.-Mexico border. Tamaulipas State Police began searching for the body of 30-year-old Hartley on Saturday, about two days after his wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, says the couple was fired upon when they ventured over to the Mexican side of the reservoir. Investigators have found no evidence of the attack; nor have they located Hartley’s remains, despite using GPS coordinates provided by U.S. officials and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, David’s father, Dennis Hartley of Milliken, says he does not believe statements by Mexican police (via 9News). A march to the Mexican Consulate General’s Office in Denver is planned for Friday and is meant to bring attention to the family’s efforts to have the body returned.
On Tuesday, Tiffany Young-Hartley recounted on NBC’s Today Show (watch below) being ambushed by men described in numerous media reports as Mexican pirates, surviving a barrage of bullets, and trying to save her husband, but eventually fleeing and leaving his body behind out of fear for her own life. The couple lived in McAllen, Texas, where David worked for an oil firm.
