The Colorado Rockies dropped two of three games away against the Phillies, with yesterday’s 3-1 loss mercifully marking the end of a 5-5 East Coast road trip. Pitcher Aaron Cook (pictured) did OK, but that wasn’t good enough to beat the Phillies’ Cliff Lee, a spectacular pitcher whom the team acquired from the Cleveland Indians before the trade deadline.
The Denver Post notes that Lee allowed just one run in seven innings, striking out nine Rockies. With the road trip behind them, the Rockies come home to face the Chicago Cubs in a four-game series starting tonight.
The Rockies have to keep winning, as they’re now a full game behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League wild-card chase and seven-and-a-half games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (check the standings via MLB.com). The Rockies have two teams nipping at their heels in the wild-card chase, including the Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Former Rockies slugger Matt Holiday is hitting a ridiculous .447 since arriving in St. Louis, according to MLB.com, and he may just help his new team catch up and overtake his old one.
