While the Colorado Rockies’ Carlos Gonzalez is a legit contender for the Triple Crown, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki continues to prove why he should never be overlooked, knocking in two home runs and powering the Rockies to a 9-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Coors Field last night. Tulo cracked his 16th and 17th home runs of the season, the former being a three-run bomb in the third inning (via Purple Row).

Tulo’s swing hasn’t been quite right since he broke his left wrist earlier in the summer, but The Denver Post points out that it isn’t hampering his power as much as one might think: Tulo hit just four home runs in his first 32 games back from the injury, but he’s hit five in the last six games.

Lost in the shine of Tulo’s performance last night was a serious leg injury to pitcher Aaron Cook (via MLB.com). Also detracting from Tulo’s glory is the demotion of Clint Barmes, writes the Post (in a separate article), which notes that the second basemen is handling the news with grace.

Yesterday’s win puts the Rockies in position to sweep the Reds today after a fourth game at Coors Field. Combined with the San Francisco Giants’ loss, and wins by the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves, the Rockies now sit four-and-a-half games out of both the division and wild-card races.
