The Colorado Rapids have provided the state’s feel-good sports story of the year. And after this weekend’s win against the Columbus Crew, that storyline will continue, with the Rapids advancing in the Major League Soccer playoffs to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Crew actually won the game 2-1, but in the MLS, teams meet for a two-game playoff with the total number of goals deciding the outcome. Since the Rapids won the first game 1-0, the aggregate score was tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation. The Rapids ended up scoring an extra goal during penalty kicks after 30 minutes of extra time, eliminating the Crew from the playoffs, writes The Denver Post.
The Jamaica Observer plays up the Rapids’ Jamaican connection: Omar Cummings, who helped put the team into the second round of the playoffs, after making a nice pass to star Conor Casey to set up the aggregate-score-tying goal.
The Rapids will next face the San Jose Earthquakes, with a Bleacher Report blogger predicting a win for Colorado, citing a defensive showcase that benefits the Rapids. Colorado has done well at home, which is where the Rapids will battle the Earthquakes starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.
