The Colorado Rockies played their last home game of 2010 yesterday, ending it with a disappointing 7-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers (recap via MLB.com). Although the Rockies went out with a whimper, another Colorado sports team is making a playoff push—and this one just might make it.

The Colorado Rapids dominated the Philadelphia Union 4-1 Wednesday night, the team’s fifth-straight home win (recap via MLS Soccer). The Rapids are sitting in the fourth spot in the MLS Western Conference, and with just four games left in the regular season, they’re looking as if they’ll secure their first playoff berth since 2006.

The Denver Post points out that the Rapids were slumping badly coming out of the World Cup break, winning one of 11 games. Coach Gary Smith had said the team would need to win four of the last 10 games to make a run at a championship. The Rapids are 4-1-1 since then and have scored a total of 41 points—more than they logged all of last season. The run to relevance comes courtesy of a surge in goal scoring, with three-straight 3-0 home wins before last night’s victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.

Smith isn’t convinced the Rapids are a lock for the playoffs, however, as he implores his team to keep pushing. “I don’t think there’s any room to be complacent,” he adds.
