Thanks to Independence Institute President Jon Caldera for inviting me to the politically incorrect 5th Annual Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Party next Saturday, June 23, at the Kiowa Creek Sporting Club east of Denver.

Billed by the Golden-based think tank as “the most fun, politically incorrect event of the year,” the ATF Party will give attendees of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their shooting abilities and celebrate those civil liberties — smoking, shooting and drinking — that most irritate Nannyists.

The slogan for the event is “Slam It! Smoke It! Shoot It!” Before I read the entire letter, I thought they were having a heroin party.

It costs $150.00 to attend, but you get 100 clay pigeons, lunch in the clubhouse, whiskey and cigars.

Since I support those civil liberties and I really dislike the Nanny State we have become, why aren’t I going? Only because it’s at 10:30 a.m which is too early for me to have fun. Maybe next year they will think about starting at 4:30 pm and having dinner at the clubhouse instead of lunch.

Instead, I’ll pick up a copy of Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi’s new book, Nanny State: How Food Fascists, Teetotaling Do-Gooders, Priggish Moralists, and other Boneheaded Bureaucrats are Turning America into a Nation of Children .
