Whether it’s a weekend-long camping trip or the perennial backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, Coloradans are constantly reminded of the beauty of Mother Nature. But for many of us, there is a disconnect between appreciating our landscapes and making an effort to preserve them. The first-ever Colorado Carbon Fundraiser hopes to change that.
The fundraiser—which will be held on the rooftop of Battery 621, a community workspace near the Art District on Santa Fe—is an evening filled with music and conversation. Featured highlights include local bluegrass duo Beck & Book (made up of longtime friends Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass and Travis Book of the Infamous Stringdusters); Western roots-rock band Coal Town Reunion; and a talk on sustainability from world-renowned environmentalist Hunter Lovins.
Hosted by the Mischief Collective, a Denver-based music management and production company, and Waste Farmers, a sustainable agricultural company, the event benefits Natural Capitalism Solutions (NCS). The local nonprofit, which helps companies and communities implement more sustainable practices (profitably), was started by Lovins, who also authored Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution.
Specifically, the event supports NCS’s Colorado Carbon Fund (CCF), a collaboration launched in 2007 between the Colorado Energy Office and the Portland-based nonprofit Climate Trust, which NCS revived in September 2016. CCF offers a tangible way for individuals, businesses, events, and communities to mitigate their greenhouse gas emissions through carbon offsetting. Most daily activities—through electricity, water, or another type of energy use— creates carbon. And carbon equals a dollar amount, and paying that amount offsets the carbon created.
Individuals can calculate their emissions and offset it by donating the dollar amount to CCF, which supports sustainability programs throughout the state. If an individual offsets their annual vehicle emissions, they can qualify for a Clean Energy Colorado license plate.
The cost of each ticket for this event includes a carbon offset of your transportation to and from the venue, alcohol (beer from Avery Brewing Co. and a selection of wines), and a raffle ticket to win prizes, such as a pair of Icelantic skis, a trip with Pedal Hopper’s 16-person bike bar, and ballroom dancing lessons. You can also purchase a year of carbon offset for your car during the event.
“It provides a really unique way to connect with people about something that I think all Coloradans have in common, which is preserving this incredible, natural landscape that we have around us,” says Hilary Gleason, co-founder of the Mischief Collective. “I can’t think of another event that is providing these structured, tangible ways that you can walk away knowing you’ve done something wonderful.”
