The Colorado Avalanche have been struggling through a mid-season slump, but they made a major turn last night with a 4-3 win over the division-leading Vancouver Canucks at the Pepsi Center. The Denver Post notes that the Avs overcame three one-goal deficits to tie the game, forcing overtime and allowing the nondescript David Jones to win the game for the team.
The victory gives the Avs 54 points on the year, putting them 11 points behind Vancouver in the division race and at seventh in the Western Conference, one spot ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks for the final playoff spot. Last night’s win is the second straight for the Avs, but they’re a mediocre 5-4-1 over the last 10 games and appear to be spinning their wheels. “Offensively, the Avalanche seem off their game,” writes Mile High Hockey, which nonetheless sees signs of hope, including the quiet improvement of starting goalie Craig Anderson.
