On the Fourth of July, nothing says American pride like red, white, and blue. But if you’re going for subtlety, consider something from Sword & Plough. The Denver fashion brand, which recently introduced a jewelry line made from .50-caliber bullet casings, makes bags, totes, and more from upcycled military gear like tents and uniforms. Launched in 2013 by Emily Núñez Cavness (an active-duty Army officer at the time) and her sister, Betsy Núñez, Sword & Plough donates 10 percent of its profits to veterans’ organizations like Got Your Six, a nonprofit that aims to dispel misconceptions about vets and support their transitions to civilian life. The brand, which won $25,000 in the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest in May, also collaborates with manufacturers who hire former military personnel to create its accessories. Now that’s style that deserves a salute.
