Although pastry chef Deanna Scimio recently left Gather, there are still plenty of reasons to stop by the coffee shop-meets-cafe-meets-happy hour space on the corner of Delaware Street and 11th Avenue. Freshly baked muffins and scones continue to pack the pastry case, and of course, there are frothy cappuccinos and potent pour-overs. Later in the day, cupcakes and cookies satisfy sweet tooths—but only time will tell if the salted caramel-chocolate cookies will remain on the menu.
Of course, there’s more to Gather than simply sweets. Take the bagels, for example. Chef and co-owner Lon Symensma (ChoLon Modern Asian Bistro) brought on Josh Pollack for his New York-style bagels. Pollack, who combines a traditional recipe with water that mimics that of the Big Apple, turns out a variety of perfectly chewy, just-salty-enough bagels. (We love the rounds so much, we mention them in the current issue.) Gather is a jumping off point for Pollack—look for him to open Rosenberg’s Bagels and Delicatessen sometime in the near future.
Bonus: Stop in for the grilled peach salad, which is plush with goat cheese, pickled red onions, and toasted pecans. The honey-roasted fruit is juicy enough that you hardly need the champagne vinaigrette. The salad works for lunch or—paired with a beer like Avery White Rascal—a light dinner. Gather is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
