Colorado state Senator Suzanne Williams was driving Sunday evening in a 2010 Honda CRV on U.S. Highway 385 in Texas when she veered over the center lane and collided with a GMC Yukon going the opposite direction. Brianna Michelle Gomez, a 30-year-old pregnant woman from Amarillo, Texas, died in the crash, according to 7News, prompting the delivery of her infant by caesarean section. The baby is in critical condition, and the other occupants of the truck, including two young children, were treated and released. “It’s a tragedy that I now have a personal experience with a highway accident,” Williams tells 9News, adding that “it’s been very traumatic,” and that she can’t recall much of what happened.
Williams, a member of the Colorado Senate’s Transportation Committee who has pushed for legislation that would allow police officers to pull over drivers not wearing seatbelts, was wearing hers during the accident. Others in her car, however, reportedly were not. Williams, of Aurora, was treated at Northwest Texas Hospital and has been released. The three occupants in her vehicle, Williams’ son, Todd Edward Williams, 41, and grandchildren, Tyler Williams, 7, and Tristan Williams, 3, were listed in stable condition. Trooper Gabriel Medrano tells The Associated Press that state Senator Williams, 65, wound up in the lane of oncoming traffic “for an unknown reason.” It is unclear whether charges will be filed.
