We’re nearly a week into March, and for the tiny, south-central Colorado Powderhorn Ski Resort, that means one thing: spring skiing. The resort’s “Top 10 Reasons Why Spring Skiing Is Awesome” is something most snow riders would agree with, including goggle tans and ditching heavy winter coats for riding in hoodies (or in the buff). After all, what’s better than skiing in the warm, spring sun and enjoying a beer on a deck at the base of the mountain after? Ski Magazine weighs in on the spring skiing dream but thinks Powderhorn leaves out the best part of this season: “the parking lot ‘beaches’ that sprout around this time of year, full of folks a little less concerned with the snow than they are with the temperature of their barbecue coals.” Meanwhile, the University of Colorado ski team has been given a full, 12-athlete roster for the upcoming NCAA Championships (via CUBuffs.com). The Buffs are one of just four teams nationally that qualified a complete team of 12 skiers, which will compete in alpine and Nordic events. The All-Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association teams were announced earlier this week, too, with a list also featuring 12 CU skiers, putting the team at the number one spot in the latest Ski Racing Magazine poll. The Buffs are strong heading to the NCAA Championships March 10-13 in Steamboat Springs, where they hope to own their in-state home-course advantage.
