Let’s get one thing straight: We know Colorado could still get a massive, flower-freezing snowstorm. But that won’t stop us from chirping about spring. Celebrate the season’s unofficial feathered mascot with these four bird-focused events.
Family Birding Adventure: Beginning Waterfowl
If your kiddo is ready to learn more about ducks than how to imitate their quacks, take him to this beginning birding excursion on the South Platte River. An easy walk is accompanied by chances to learn about how ducks eat and take care of themselves. Don’t forget the binoculars! Saturday, March 25, 8 a.m. to noon; Colorado Front Range Trail, Steele St. and E. 78th Ave.; free; denveraudubon.org
Spring Birds
Birding is just as much about having fun as it is about learning. From tots to teens, take a one-mile hike around Westminster’s Standley Lake to peep through binoculars at birds that call the park home, as well as those just passing through on their migration. In addition to bird-spotting, the guide will also toss in tips on how to identify the feathered friends in flight. Saturday, March 25, 8–9:30 a.m.; Standley Lake Park, 9785 Eagle View Loop; free; ci.westminster.co.us/parksrec
Bumblebee Jamboree
This fluttering adventure starts before your family even walks out the door. Let your kids dress up as their favorite pollinator: bees, butterflies, or, yes, birds. Then they can dance and sing along to the tunes of the Rocky Mountain Aardvarks. Saturday, April 22, 10:30–11:30 a.m.; Denver Botanic Gardens, 1007 York St.; $5–$12; botanicgardens.org
Birding at Barr Lake State Park
Grab a picnic and perch your family along the boardwalk at Barr Lake State Park. The park is home to plenty of aviary species, ranging from pelicans and blue herons to grebes and osprey. The Nature Center, which has a grand reopening on April 1, has bird feeders which often attract the flying animals for close encounters. Barr Lake State Park, 13401 Picadilly Rd., Brighton; anytime; from $3; cpw.state.co.us
