While the state’s major ski resorts continue to report big numbers in terms of snow and revenue, cross-country skiers and snowshoers looking for a reprieve from 1-70 may want to head for the South Rim Road of the Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park. The Denver Post points out that the park, slightly northeast of Montrose, is open 24 hours a day during winter and offers a serene view overlooking the Black Canyon, one of the deepest gashes in North America.
Wherever you’re headed, there’s a new service that might help you get there. TheSkiLift.org is a website created by two students (one from the University of Colorado, the other from the Colorado School of Mines) that uses social media to match riders and skiers looking to carpool, writes the Colorado Daily.
If you’d rather just watch others risk life and limb on the snow, there are plenty of events coming up to keep you busy. Denver Big Air is less than a week away (structural concerns aside), and the ESPN Winter X Games, one of the action-sports world’s biggest events, is set for January 27 through January 30 in Aspen. The free event will feature most of the world’s renowned snowboarders, skiers, and snowmobilers, along with Big Boi, the Atlanta-based rapper who’s part of the famed duo Outkast, notes OntheSnow.com.
