Aspen’s ski season was dealt a double whammy: The snow hasn’t been the best this year, and earlier this month a massive rockslide on I-70 made driving to the resort appear nearly as difficult as making it past base camp on Mount Everest. But I-70 has reopened and, with the exception of the errant boulder, the conditions are good enough for one more swish down the mountain. In fact, Aspen Skiing Company says there’s enough snow left to extend the ski season for two more weekends.
Lifts on Aspen Mountain will run on April 17-18 and April 24-25, company senior vice president David Perry told the Aspen Chamber Resort Association board of directors Tuesday morning (via The Aspen Times).
“We have enough snowpack. Even if we start to lose snowpack at the bottom, we’ve got enough up high,” he says.
It’s good news for snow buffs, considering the last weekend of skiing has arrived for five resorts, notes Westword. That may not seem so surprising to Denverites, who enjoyed summertime temps in the city yesterday, breaking a 131-year-old record (via The Denver Post).
Indeed, incredible weather this time of year tends to bring out the rowdiness in some snow frolickers, and that’s precisely why Summit County sheriff’s deputies and Breckenridge police plan to be out in full force this “Gaper Day” (tomorrow) at Breck and A-Basin, reports Summit Daily News. Beware, partiers: You could lose your ski passes for up to two years for getting too crazy.
