Steamboat skier and longtime U.S. Ski Team member Caroline Lalive announced her retirement Tuesday, walking away from World Cup racing after 13 seasons, according to SkiRacing.com. The last few years have pounded Lalive with injuries, including one to her knee in February. Over the course of her career, she has suffered 19 total injuries, including 12 that required multiple surgeries.

Lalive splashed onto the scene at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, finishing seventh in the combined event. She took the gold in the 1999 Junior World Championships and had 15 top-10 World Cup finishes, writes the Steamboat Pilot & Today, which notes that Lalive trained with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club after moving to town at age 16.

Her retirement seems to have been a recent decision, as her personal Web site still says she plans to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada.
