Where: South Park Hill
Go For: Ten thousand square feet of new and vintage midcentury modern furniture, artwork, and lighting that give your home a colorful and unique—but still classic—feel.
Midcentury modern is back to stay—that is, if East Colfax’s Mod Livin’ is any indication. We recently dropped by and caught up with Jill Warner, who owns the store with her husband, Erick Roorda. When Warner and Roorda first opened the store in 2001, they lived in the loft upstairs that now houses their Blu Dot furniture collection. They’ve come a long way, but Warner admits she’s still an avid collector—so much so that some pieces never make it through the storefront’s door before she nabs them for the couple’s house (now off-site).
5280: How did Mod Livin’ begin?
Warner: My husband and I opened Mod Livin’ 13 years ago in August. We’d always been collectors. He was working for United Airlines and I worked for Continental Airlines. We had a little money, bought the building, and decided to open our store.
Where do you find your store’s items?
I sell new and vintage. I have two vintage dealers [John Mayer and Beth Gottlieb], and they go all over the United States, but a lot of it comes through the front door. People realize that we sell vintage and that they can consign things here.
What makes Mod Livin’ stand out among furniture stores?
Between Beth, John, my husband, and I, we probably have the most knowledge in town, and we’ve been around for a while—long enough that people know that we’re honest. Otherwise, our reputation would have been ruined years ago.
What trends have you noticed in the industry?
When we first started, Heywood-Wakefield was huge in the vintage world. In the last five years, Danish modern’s gone crazy. It’s funny because nowadays people only buy new sofas and everything else is vintage, like vintage chairs and all the accessories. I think it’s because people want to be comfortable.
