So often when we finally make a design decision—and pay for it—we’re forced to wait the requisite eight to 10 weeks before we actually see how that sofa will work in the living room. “That’s just torture,” says interior designer Amy Adams, owner of the nearly year-old Denver boutique Adams & Jane Home Collection. At her shop, tucked off Colorado Boulevard north of I-25 (just south of Glendale), Adams offers an alternative: ever-changing merchandise she sells directly off the floor. In fact, she’ll even take it to your house so you can try it out in your space before you buy it.

“People need to see how things look in their home with all their stuff,” says Adams, who brings more than 30 years of interiors experience to her clients. “When I come into a home with the pieces, we both can see how it works in the space. And then they get to enjoy it right away.”

Adams & Jane functions as both an office for Adams’ design business and a traditional furniture and accessories storefront. Her style is eclectic, with European influences and a profound love of color. “Right now in Denver, there’s so much gray,” says Adams. “I love bringing color into people’s homes.” One of her easiest color prescriptions comes via her assortment of reasonably priced artwork, most of which costs less than $1,000. Adams & Jane also stocks one of the city’s best collections of down-filled pillows in traditional and contemporary patterns, so you can find something that works with any decor.

Adams goes to market at least four times annually. “My criteria is always, ‘Would I put that in my home?’” she says. Right now, that means a nailhead-studded, upholstered upright sofa for $1,499 or a large-scale sectional sofa for $4,199. (We’re pining for a substantial mahogany sideboard, priced at $2,000, that features exquisite dovetail workmanship; in the shop, Adams paired the traditional piece with contemporary art and a fringed chandelier, a microcosm of her driving design aesthetic.)

Prices here are surprisingly tame: Table lamps are mostly priced under $400, and floor lamps range from $600 to $700. Most of Adams’ design clients are in their 30s to mid-40s, and she purposely keeps prices moderate. “I like to keep the store fresh and keep items moving,” she says. “I don’t need to mark things up three or four times.”

Although the majority of Adams & Jane’s customers are Adams’ design clients, the shop welcomes drop-in shoppers as well as other designers (with a to-the-trade discount). This holiday season, Adams will offer her design services for seasonal decorating and has already a slew of holiday decor on the way to the store. Her design work often slows down after Halloween, and she expects to fill her shelves with more gifts and accessories toward the end of the year. Whether its holiday decorating or furnishing a new home, Adams’ philosophy is one and the same: “Really focus on one thing you love in a room, and work everything else around it.” Luckily, you’ll have no trouble finding that one thing (or two, or three) at Adams & Jane.
