School is back in session—and not just for your kids. It’s time to get back to a gym routine after a summer of outdoor adventure and, hopefully, lots of vacations and relaxation. To make the transition easier, take a test run at one of the three newest gyms in town. We promise they’ll make you sweat.
Flywheel Sports
Neighborhood: Union Station
Opened: July
The Workout: Spin
The Deets: Flywheel will provide your cycling shoes—and even place the appropriate size in a cubby (with the same number as your bike) so there’s no waiting around when you arrive. The high-intensity cycling classes are held in dark, stadium-style rooms, and each bike has its own screen that tracks your watts, resistance level, and more. (Read our assistant editor’s firsthand experience.) The New York-based fitness studio also offers its own takes on barre (FlyBarre) and functional training (FlyFit), as well as restorative classes. Bonus: Flywheel is located across the street from Union Station’s bustling Whole Foods Market. Oh, and there are USB chargers inside the lockers, so you’ll be ready to tackle whatever your day has in store after class is over.
Pricing: $15 single class; $250/month unlimited membership
F45
Neighborhood: Sloan’s Lake
Opened: August
The Workout: HIIT
The Deets: F45 is shorthand for “functional 45 minutes,” meaning that at this studio, you can tackle your day’s exercise in less than an hour. F45 offers 31 separate workout styles—each with awesome names like Angry Bird and Renegade—which fuse high-intensity interval training (HIIT), circuit training, and functional training into one challenging workout. At the Sloan’s Lake studio, you’ll find cardio-focused HIIT classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; Tuesdays and Thursdays are all about resistance training; and the weekends are a hybrid. There are no drop-ins here, but if you’re worried about committing to a month-long membership, the Australia-born F45 is currently offering a two-week free trial; sign up on the website.
Pricing: $135/month unlimited founding membership
Alchemy 365
Neighborhood: LoHi
Opening: September 22
The Workout: Strength training and yoga
The Deets: Another transplant, the Minnesota-born Alchemy 365 is making its debut in the Mile High City this fall. The boutique fitness studio’s founders have a background in CrossFit, so expect some seriously sweaty, functional movement-focused workouts. But the difference with Alchemy 365 is that the core classes (A10/A20, APulse) incorporate moves commonly found in power yoga. There’s also a 30-minute weightlifting offering (AStrong) and the stretch-it-out AFlow. Sign up for a free week.
Pricing: $20 single class; $159/month unlimited membership ($139/month for founding members; limited quantity available)
Coming Soon(ish)
Denver boutique fitness scene is blowing up. Here are three more studios that will be coming to the Mile High City soon.
Platform Strength is the brainchild of local fitness wunderkind Emily Schromm. She’s a 2014 Women’s Health Next Fitness Star and former cast member on MTV’s The Real World and The Challenge. The RiNo gym—which will be accessible 24/7, features a WiFi work area, and offer online memberships for on-the-go workouts—is planning a September 22 grand opening.
Golden Triangle neighbors Fitness in the City and the River Yoga are expanding with a second location in Five Points, opening the last week of September. Expect the same positive energy-fueled classes and partnerships with other local studios.
You probably know Pura Vida for its sleek Cherry Creek location, with locker rooms that also house whirlpools and steam rooms. That high-end health club vibe is expanding across town, with the announcement of Pura Vida Studio RiNo, a nearly 15,000-square-foot health and fitness center slated to open in the new World Trade Center Denver in 2020. Something tells us it’ll be worth the wait.
