A jury trial for Brenda Stewart, the Denver madam who allegedly led the high-class Denver Players/Denver Sugar escort agency, has been postponed because a defense attorney needs time to sift through tens of thousands of documents amassed by the Internal Revenue Service in an investigation, reports Face the State. It’s unknown what information might be contained in the documents, but the name and personal cell phone number of a former federal judge, Edward Nottingham, appears on a list, according to prior media reports, along with possible other unnamed elite Denverites. Stewart is charged with several counts of tax evasion, money laundering, and one count of witness tampering.
The case, initially assigned to Senior Judge John L. Kane, will be reassigned because Kane has recused himself, citing a canon of the judge’s code of conduct in which his “impartiality might reasonably be questioned” because of a personal bias, prejudice, or other conflict of interest that may influence his decision. Prostitution arrests in Denver have been rising, up about 72 percent in 2010, notes Westword. Meanwhile, a 45-year-old alleged Denver prostitute, Frances Woodke, was arrested earlier this week, accused of knowingly spreading HIV (via Fox 31). Apparently, Woodke has known for years that she is HIV positive. She was arrested after offering sex to an undercover police officer for $23.
