Later this week, the 50-and-older golf pros will gather in Parker for the 71st Senior PGA Championship, giving Colorado fans the opportunity to check out some of the game’s greats.
Russ Miller, director of golf at The Broadmoor, tells The Denver Post he got a front-row view of the seniors’ game when the U.S. Senior Open was held at his club in 2008, and says it’s amazing how much control the players have as they make their way through the course. “Their misses aren’t as bad as guys on the regular PGA Tour because they’re not trying to hit it as far as the young guys,” Miller tells the Post. “They’re playing within themselves. They pay particular attention to course management. They know their capabilities. They don’t try to cut corners.”
The Post asks Miller to pick his top 10 players heading into the event, which starts later this week, and his list includes well-known names, such as Fred Couples, Fred Funk, Tom Watson, and Eduardo Romero, who won the 2008 U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor.
Defending Senior PGA Tour Champion Michael Allen said in a press conference last month (via the PGA) that the Colorado Golf Club in Parker is going to be “a wonderful venue.” The praise and the upcoming event are a big deal for a club that is facing rumors about its long-term viability due to the economic downturn, reports The Denver Post.
