Things were going well for Colorado Attorney General John Suthers this week, including a re-election endorsement from The Pueblo Chieftain. But the campaign trail hasn’t been without controversy, and now, the outreach director of Safe Streets Colorado is accusing Suthers of assault. Robert Trucker, who confronted Suthers at a League of Women Voters event in Loveland earlier this week to ask why he opposes Proposition 102, alleges Suthers “poked, slapped, and shoved” him in response.
Suthers denies the incident ever occurred. “I never touched the man,” he tells The Denver Post. “I was munching on popcorn the whole time. There was no high voices or anything like that.” Suthers admits, however, to using his finger to close the view screen of Trucker’s video camera, claiming Trucker pushed the camera toward him.
At least one witness appears to back up Suthers’ version of events, notes the Loveland Connection. But as officials in Larimer County investigate, Trucker is adamant something happened: “I said, ‘Attorney General Suthers, do you mind if I record this conversation?’ He took my hand and the camera and pushed it down toward the ground. He proceeded to take his finger and poke me in the chest, saying I was wrong this, I was wrong that.”
