Renowned ultra-marathoner, record setter, and author of Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness, Colorado resident Scott Jurek suggests these injury prevention tips for runners (and other athletes):
1
Examine your everyday activities
Workstation setups and shoe selections (heels!) can contribute to injuries.
2
Add supplemental exercise activities to your routine
Yoga, core strengthening, and/or Pilates are good choices.
3
Find the right footwear
Visit a running specialty store or physical therapist for recommendations and an in-depth analysis. Do this before embarking on a distance-running program.
4
Pay attention to technique
Aim for a running stride rate of 85 to 90 strides per minute. Short, fast strides allow your body mass to center underneath your feet, putting the least amount of stress on legs and feet.
