CU’s Jennifer Barringer has been honored with the 2009 Honda Sports Award in track and field, making her the nation’s top collegiate female track and field athlete, writes USA Today. Barringer won the award over three other athletes after being named the 2008-2009 University of Colorado Athlete of the Year award and setting several collegiate records for the mile run, according to CBS4.
She competed with the U.S. Olympic team at the 2008 Games in Beijing, finishing ninth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. She’s also made the dean’s list four times and the Big 12 Commissioner’s honor roll eight times. Barringer has a 3.56 GPA as she heads into her final semester this fall in Boulder, where she will graduate with a degree in political science and economics. She has the potential to be named the top collegiate female athlete overall when the award is announced on June 22.
